bully

"Wrestling is great! It's true man versus man competition, no room for wimps."
— Juri

Juri Karamazov is a character in Bully, and is a member of the Jocks at Bullworth Academy. He was voiced by Lloyd Floyd.

Character description

Juri is a tall Jock, with light green eyes and a brown buzzcut. He wears a blue Bullworth t-shirt over an off-white long-sleeved undershirt, grey slacks, and blue gym sneakers. Much like Chad, his left wrist is bound with bandages. Juri speaks with a heavy eastern European accent. In the wintertime he adds a wool hat and white mittens.

An error in the game data files name him as the second in command of the Jocks. An image of beta versions of the Jocks does not include Juri at all - instead, Bob is pictured with the clique. There are enough similarities between Bob and Juri that it is believed, though unconfirmed, that Juri is a replacement character for Bob.

Characteristics

Juri speaks with an Eastern European accent, frequently struggling with the English language, poor grammar, and standard vocabulary; for example, he has difficulties pronouncing the word "president", and seems to not know the English phrase for fire alarm. He holds his classes in low regard, and complains about athletes being forced to take them. He appears to come from a dysfunctional and abusive background; he offhandedly compares being trapped in the carnival's funhouse to when his dad would lock him up in the closet. Despite this, Juri remains loyal to his mother, whom he claims makes superior clothing to what is sold in stores.

He seems to be a believer in a crude form of Social Darwinism, asserting that physical power is the only true authority, and views conflicts such as Mr. Hattrick's bullying of Mr. Galloway as natural proof of this philosophy. Guided by this "might makes right" mentality, Juri harbors an extreme hatred for the Nerds, whom he labels as "subhumans". He actively seeks them out as targets when he is in a bad mood, often finding solace in tormenting them.

Much of Juri's aggressive personality is driven by insecurities regarding his masculinity and a paranoia of being perceived as weak. He frequently tries to reassure himself of his own strength, and privately worries that his peers might think he looks feminine.[1] In combat, he also decries tactics like spitting or sneak attacks as feminine. Juri also shows classic symptoms of steroid abuse, like some of the other Jocks; he often wonders about pharmaceutical side effects and suffers from irritating back acne.

Though he plays on the Jocks' dodgeball team and is associated with the school's football team (though his team number is not known), Juri has a preference for wrestling, which he describes as a pure competition with no room for weaklings. He frequently accompanies Damon and also wrestles with his best friend Luis, though he privately has doubts about the stability of their friendship. Despite his tough athletic facade, Juri is highly sensitive to criticism from authority figures, and dislikes being yelled at by Mr. Burton. He also holds the belief that Miss Danvers is attracted to him.

His use of the piledriver (aka Michinoku Driver) when fighting may be a reference to the character Zangief from Street Fighter, who was also a wrestler from eastern Europe.

Role in game

In This Is Your School, Juri is in the cafeteria, arm wrestling with Damon as Ted watches. Just as the bell rings, Juri looks up and glares at Jimmy and Gary.

Juri can be seen in the mission The Candidate taunting Earnest with Damon. He ends up giving Earnest a vicious wedgie, and participates in the egging during Earnest's speech.

During Chapter 4, Juri makes regular appearances during the missions, but for the most part has no individual role. During The Big Game, Jimmy spreads super glue on the benches by the football field as one of several pranks, and Juri sits on the bench and gets stuck to it while other Jocks laugh at his predicament.

He's also caught in the gym during The Gym is Burning, where the basketball post falls on him. When Jimmy helps him Juri claims he could have done it himself, but a piece of debris falls in front of him causing another fire and forcing him to ask Jimmy for help again. Despite this, he will still be hostile to Jimmy after the mission is completed due to the Jock faction's respect being 40%.

Deleted content

In Cook's Date, judging by dialogue the original plan was for various students to engage in coordinated harassment of Edna and Dr. Watts. Juri and Casey would have been among them, and have hassled them about an athlete-specific diet. Juri mentions during this that he gained 20 lbs of muscle from Edna's cooking.

Although he appears in Funhouse Fun as backup, he has unused dialogue from that mission. He also has an unused dialogue line from Defender of the Castle.
