"I don't see why Derby doesn't want to ally with the Jocks. It'd be a perfect match."
— Justin

Justin Vandervelde is a character in Bully, and is a member of the Preppies. He was voiced by Jaesun Celebre.

Character description

Justin is a medium sized prep with auburn hair combed to the left, and hazel eyes. He wears the standard Preppie Aquaberry uniform and a gold Aquaberry watch. He also appears to have an overbite. Like most Preppies, he speaks in a faux English accent. His boxing outfit is the same shade of blue as the Aquaberry sweaters, with white trim. In winter, Justin wears his standard uniform and adds a yellow and blue striped scarf.

Characteristics

Justin has a keen interest in sports, being a boxer, playing on the Preppies dodgeball team, and being a good swimmer. He challenges Jimmy to beat his time record in swimming on an errand. Unlike most of his clique, Justin has a strong desire to integrate with the Jocks. He frequently contemplates joining a sports team, wonders if the Jock leader Ted would be interested in his friendship, and suggests hosting social gatherings at the Harrington House specifically to invite them. Consequently, he cannot understand why Derby opposes this idea.

A prominent aspect of Justin's bullying habits is his fixation on throwing eggs. He takes immense pride in his accuracy, once describing an attack on a Greaser as a flawless success. During combat, he frequently relies on egg-themed puns to taunt his opponents, such as "these yolks crack me up" and "you look a little scrambled". However, Justin behaves lazily and prefers to delegate his harassment; he even admits that he would rather pay someone else to execute eggings on his behalf. His standard insult of choice for anyone outside his tax bracket is "peon".

As with the other Preps, Justin frequently uses his family's vast wealth to assert superiority. He openly admits that paying others to torment poor people makes him feel good about himself, and confesses to finding entertainment in watching them fight. He also firmly believes that money grants him immunity from rules and consequences. This financial corruption extends to his academics, where he uses his father's checkbook to buy test papers from Mr. Hattrick. He also notes that he can exploit his family's connections with faculty members, pointing out that Hattrick previously worked for his father. Ultimately, Justin plans to skip higher education entirely to join his family's enterprise.

Despite his arrogant exterior, Justin is a bit of a coward when it comes to fighting. When facing a beating, he immediately attempts to bribe his way out of danger or begs his attacker to stop. If he is defeated, he reassures himself that his wealth makes him superior and that his attackers will eventually work under him. He is also surprisingly cynical about the nature of relationships at the school, observing that genuine friendships are non-existent. Similar to Parker, he occasionally worries about his social status, fearing that he might not be shallow or harsh enough to keep his "lessers" in line, though he reassures himself by boasting of his close relationship with Derby, who, according to him, considers Justin as his best friend.

Justin also has an admiration for Greek culture and classical aesthetics. When grooming himself in front of a mirror, he proudly describes his own physical features as Grecian. He also complains about the aesthetic quality of Bullworth Academy, lamenting that there aren't enough Greek marble sculptures at the school.

Role in game

As one of the Preppies, Justin features regularly during Chapter 2. His only speaking role is during Preppie Challenge, where he informs Jimmy that he's ineligible for the offered $1,000,000 house prize because Jimmy's parents aren't on "The Board". He gives Jimmy the Beach House instead. Aside from appearing in Preppie Challenge as the second opponent, he is featured in the mission The Eggs, where he is given the key to the gates of Tad's house. Jimmy has to knock him out to get the key. In the Chapter III mission Bait, he, along with Tad, accompanies Gord to fight back the Greasers at the BMX Park.

During the non-storyline mission Cheating Time, he buys advance test papers from Mr. Hattrick, which he then sells to other students for a profit. Jimmy takes pictures of Justin buying the answers from Hattrick and then selling them to Greasers Lucky and Vance and Jocks Casey and Mandy.

Justin also gives Jimmy two errands: one is to beat his record time for swimming out and around the buoy near the lighthouse in the bay by Old Bullworth Vale, and the other one to egg the tenements in New Coventry because "paying [Jimmy] to harass poor people makes [him] feel good about [himself]" . Justin also appears as an opponent during the boxing minigame.

Deleted content

In the beta, Justin may have been the trophy thief in Beach Rumble instead of Gord. Gord has no specific lines for the mission, whereas Justin actually has some mission specific quotes (2-07) that go unused.

In the beta version of Cheating Time, Justin's role was actually smaller - Jimmy was supposed to eavesdrop on a conversation with him and Mr. Hattrick. He would then sell the test papers to Tad.

Moreover, according to multiple unused speech files, he may have given out more errands: an egg throwing errand[1], a "bog roll" errand (much like Max and Vance in the final game)[2], an errand in which he requested graffiti to be painted in New Coventry[3] and an errand in which he requested the girls' dorm to be egged (much like an errand from Constantinos in the final game)[4].
